Abstract:
Active drug ingredients for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment in dietary supplements for sexual enhancement were determined. Ingredients in the products were extracted by methanol for preparation of the test solutions. The solutions were analyzed with an HPTLC plate to screen and narrow down the candidate active drug ingredients. A reversed phase HPLC equipped photodiode array detector analysis was then performed to ascertain the retention time and UV spectrum of the detected peaks from the test solutions and the tested drug ingredients. An LC/MS/MS analysis was used for final identification of drug ingredients in the test solutions. These results suggested that the examined three products contained tadalafil. In addition, one of these products also contained vardenafil. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the drug ingredients was also performed by an HPLC analysis. Our consecutive analyses showed that screening analysis with a TLC analysis had some advantages to make the analyses efficient.
