Abstract:
A universal detector for high performance liquid chromatography has been a dream for a long time. UV detector has been one of the most popular in HPLC field. For molecules like carbohydrates and lipids, which have neither UV chromophores nor fluorescence, refractive index detector (RI) and an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) have been used. These techniques, however, are not always satisfactory particularly in terms of sensitivity. Recently, ESA Biosciences, Inc. has developed the corona charged aerosol (CAD) detector. This universal detector is highly sensitive and gives consistent and reliable response, as well as wide dynamic range. It has been found that CAD detector is the most suited for determination of impurities and degradants testings in natural products and synthetic compounds.
